Various machines that produce drawings as artworks have been built so far, but many of them are sustained by the artist’s creative intervention.
To explore what becomes visible when that creative intervention is diluted to the extreme, I decided to investigate my relationship with the machine from an attitude of proactive bystanding.
What I attempt here is to use the drawing machine ritually, as a device for eliciting invisible forces.
The machine is assembled from scavenged scrap; most of its parts are dead-stock items that do not carry traces of having been used elsewhere or for other purposes.
Just as a person cannot confirm their own existence entirely alone, I believe that even discarded parts or a machine cannot affirm their being without mediation by others.
There may be no invisible force hidden within each scrap, but by treating them as if such forces exist, I aim to witness the moment when the hands of a broken clock begin to move.
これまでに芸術作品としての絵を描く機械はさまざまなものが作られてきが、その多くが作者の創造的介入によって支えられている現状がある。
創造的介入を限りなく薄めていったその先に何が見えるのかということを考えるために、積極的傍観という態度でマシンとの関係性を探ろうと考えた。
ここで試みているのは、目に見えない力を誘発する装置としてドローイングマシンを儀式的に用いるというものである。
マシンは寄せ集めの廃品で構成していて、その多くがデッドストック品という何か別の場所や用途で使用されていたという過去の痕跡を内包しないものたちである。
自分だけで自分の存在を確認することはできないように、廃品やマシンであっても他者を介さなければ自分自身の存在を確認することはできないと思う。
廃品それぞれに秘められた目に見えない力というものは存在しないのかもしれないが、そうしたものが存在しているかのように扱うことで、壊れた時計の針が動き出す瞬間に立ち会うことができるような気がする。
